My first experience of hand rearing to save a 24 hour old cockatiel. I knew something was wrong one morning when I went down to my aviary, and both parents where in the flight. I knew there was young in the nestbox but I had not as yet looked in the box myself, but now I did and found 3 young babies, I thought they where all dead, I felt them and they where very cold. I took them out one at a time, two where dead, I took the third one out and I thought that was dead too but it suddenly moved, I gently blew on it, yes, it was alive but only just so I put it in the warmest place, my bra! I ran into the house and got a lamp put it upside down over a box put a dish in the box with tissue and put the tiny baby in it. I then rang a friend up who I knew did a bit of hand rearing. He brought me special food, a syringe and showed me what to do. The next day my husband made a better incubator for (lucky) the baby bird that was fine apart from a tiny cut over one eye. That was 6 years ago she is still with us and is with Oscar in the aviary as happy as 'Larry'. The only thing that is wrong with her is she has only got one eye, but she manages fine. I am so glad I tried with her. By Joan from Southport |
